myclimate Innovation Award
myclimate celebrates its tenth birthday! For this occasion, we have decided to give an award to an innovative product that actively contributes to climate protection. Out of the numerous applications, myclimate has nominated three projects. The winner, for whom myclimate will calculate the carbon footprint free of charge, will be announced at the anniversary celebration on September 14.
Direktrecycling Couverts
Used paper is directly reused as envelopes
Envelopes are produced directly from used paper – concretely: from out-dated maps. This product shows that direct reuse is environmentally friendly, aesthetically appealing and suitable en masse as well as for daily usage. Direktrecycling skips the whole process of paper recycling to produce its envelopes. This saves water, energy, bleacher and binding material. 4.4g CO2 per envelope are reduced thanks to this simplification. If 1‰ of all Swiss letters were sent in a Direktrecycling envelope, 10 tons CO2 would be saved.
(Numbers based on estimations)
Greencity
Greencity is the first CO2 neutral neighbourhood of Switzerland.
Greencity offers its 7000 inhabitants the possibility of decreasing their energy consumption. 100 per cent of the thermic energy needs are covered by renewable energy, provided for example by the hydropower station of the old spinning company. Heat pump systems and photovoltaic devices also contribute to the energy production of the neighbourhood. Car-sharing and docking stations for e-cars are present on site to ensure a more environmentally friendly mobility. Greencity is a prime example that inspires local authorities and the whole of Switzerland to perform a rethinking towards a low carbon society.
Solar fuels from waste biomass
Agricultural waste is upgraded through solar energy into widely applicable, clean and energy-rich synthesis gas called syngas.
With this gasification process, solar energy is converted into a storable and transportable form. Syngas can be used as a direct substitute for conventional fossil fuels, therefore avoiding greenhouse gas emissions of the latter. The replacement of 10 billion litres kerosene by syngas leads to a reduction of 24 million tons of CO2. Thus, it offers a significant impact on the energy supply in the mobility sector – especially aviation.
myclimate Innovation Award
myclimate has been looking for manufacturers and suppliers with products or services that reduce CO2 emissions in the following ways:
- using renewable energies
- energy-efficient production
- optimising distribution processes
- using renewable resources
- recycling of the materials
- motivating the user to save energy
