The objective of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the improvement of water and energy efficiency in low-income households on a long-term sustainable basis. By lowering the use of fossil fuels for water heating in these households, the project will reduce greenhouse gases. There are numerous additional benefits to the households, the water system and the country as a whole.

In Mexico, household water heaters are predominantly fuelled directly with either natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The project consists of the free distribution and direct installation by certified lady plumbers of water saving devices in 325,000 low-income urban households in the Mexico City Valley and other regions of the country. Project water saving devices will include low-flow showerheads and faucet regulators, technologies which are produced by Adelmar International, a local, woman-led technology provider which is highly recognized in Mexico for its innovative developments. The water saving devices effectively reduce hot water dispensed from targeted water fixtures (shower, bathroom and kitchen sinks) without reducing the level of service or comfort to the users. There is a direct linkage between reducing domestic hot water use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, the country’s Water Department (the Conagua) is highly motivated to reduce water demand to both save water and reduce energy costs. Energy costs consume up to 40 per cent of the Water Department’s gross revenues.

The project also contributes to social and economic benefits. There will be significant annual water and fuel savings, which directly leads to cost savings per home of approximately USD 307, which is worth 44 days of yearly income. The water usage of up to 5 Million residents declines from 164 to 95 litres per person per day, a saving of more than 40 per cent. Emission reductions associated to the reduced fossil fuel consumption of the programme could reach 325,000 tons of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to removing 65,000 cars from the road each year. Through these measures, the whole country can save a lot of water and thus help to reduce costs and stress concerning watersheds, aquifers, water, wastewater treatment, piping, and wastewater disposal.

The performance of the installed showerhead is good, because it allows to save gas and water, it is perfect. We saved the use of gas, before it lasted 15 days, now it lasts 30 days.

The climate protection project will also help train and employ 500 lady plumbers to carry out the installation and monitoring of the water saving devices in the households and support their training in business skills for future self-employment. In addition, this initiative is contracting small and medium sized Mexican enterprises and public institutions to perform functions such as collection and delivery of water saving devices, training, recruiting and supervision of lady plumbers, data capturing, recycling and other activities. Furthermore, the project raises public awareness and education about the benefits of water efficiency, energy efficiency, and sustainability practices.

Cambio Azul, myclimate's project partner, has already tested the technology and the households’ experience with it by installing the water saving devices in 100 households in Mexico City. A number of households were surveyed about their level of satisfaction with the new technology installed in their homes and 100% of those interviewed said that they would recommend the technology to others.
