One’s own investment strategy and structure of the investment portfolio can bring about the dilemma for foundations of acting against their own objectives. This can occur, for instance, through investments in fossil fuels or environmentally unfriendly activities. myclimate can provide important information and support when evaluating the portfolio. As part of a collaborative project, an information brochure on the subject of “Environmental Footprint of Foundations” was drawn up.
For multiple reasons, the Paris climate goals are particularly important for non-profit foundations.
The reason that a foundation exists is for the overall social effect that it creates. This is not limited to its promotional activities; it is a comprehensive view that comprises all aspects of the foundation’s actions, including the effects of how the foundation’s assets are invested. In regard to climate goals, this means reducing the environmental or carbon footprint of the foundation’s investments.
Such an approach allows the foundation to avoid investing its assets in a way that conflicts with its values and objectives. This increases the overall impact of the foundation’s actions, reduces the financial risks in its portfolio and contributes to the likelihood of renewing its “licence to operate”.
Together with other actions – such as implementing climate goals directly as part of its funding activities or introducing issues into public discussion – every foundation can make its own contribution to solving this great challenge of our times.
Five easy steps to a better environmental footprint for your foundation’s assets
The organisation “Foundation and Sustainability” along with RobecoSAM and myclimate have recently released a brochure to give an introduction to this complex issue. The brochure was officially introduced at an event for invited foundation board members in the myclimate Cloud Lounge at the end of September. It offers background information as well as specific practical advice, and can be downloaded free of charge online or ordered in print form.
myclimate can provide foundations and organisations with a thorough estimate of their carbon footprint. In addition, we can demonstrate the “handprint” (the positive impact of invested capital), including the degree to which individual investment decisions are contributing to reaching sustainable development goals. Additionally, the myclimate team has been supporting various partners for years in their participation in a number of sustainability initiatives, e.g. the CDP
