Installing the largest solar power plant in Latin America the project is an alternative to the fossil driven electricity fuel mix by sun power and furthermore creates local employment, agricultural products and a fund for social activities
The project activity consists in the installation of a 30 Megawatt (60 times bigger than Mont Soleil project in Jura, Switzerland) photovoltaic Solar Energy Farm, which is considered as a sustainable source of electricity generation. The project activity is developed by Electronic J.R.C., S.R.L. and will be the largest solar power plant in Latin America and a first of its kind in the region. It will generate an estimated direct employment for 500 persons during the construction phase and approximately 150 persons during its operational stage. Up to 45 Giga Watt hours (equals the consumption of 9000 households in Switzerland) electricity will be produced per year thanks to ideal solar radiation conditions.
The project will be installed in the ‘Cruce de Boronga’ sector, municipality and province of Monte Plata, Dominican Republic. An assessment of environmental effects has been done. The owner is obliged to reforest outside the project area any if needed deforestation activity and to conserve an area next to a river adjacent to the project site. Inside the project area agricultural products like pineapple will be grown.
The single axis tracker technology of the photovoltaic panels guarantees a maximal efficiency thanks to constant solar tracking. The expected solar irradiation per year (with 1,490 kWh/kWp) is approximately one and a half times higher than in Switzerland.
Thanks to the support of myclimate and the CO2 offsetting mechanism the attractiveness of the project for investors can be improved. In addition, a visitor center will be installed next to the site to demonstrate renewable energy possibilities and to provide climate education. At least five percent of the income of carbon revenue will flow in a revolving fund managed by the community of Monte Plata dedicated for social activities.
