Gold Standard: More than just CO2 reduction
The Gold Standard is an independent label that certifies high-quality carbon offset projects and the emission reduction certificates generated by them. The sustainability criteria outlined in this standard are taken as guidelines for all myclimate projects.
The Gold Standard can be applied to Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Joint Implementation (JI) and VER projects (Verified Emission Reduction).
Ensuring that offset projects actually lead to a reduction of greenhouse gases is not the only goal of the Gold Standard. These projects are also to support sustainable development in the respective project regions.
The Gold Standard criteria have been developed to supplement existing standards under the leadership of the WWF. The motivation for this was to make the contribution of carbon offset projects to the effective reduction of greenhouse gases more transparent and to emphasise the contribution to sustainable development in developing countries. Today, the Gold Standard is an independent organisation with headquarters in Geneva.
