Precipitation
Precipitation amounts vary considerably across regions and, over time, this makes it difficult to pinpoint long term trends. Generally an increase in global precipitation is expected over the next 100 years due to increased concentrations of water vapour in the warmed-up atmosphere.
There are major seasonal and regional differences:
- While at higher latitudes a general increase in precipitation is expected, the currently dry subtropics are expected to receive even less rainfall.
- For Central Europe, more mild and wet winters and dry summers have been predicted.
The most severe repercussions are expected from the increasing frequency and intensity of heavy rainfalls.
