The cost of a ton of CO2 varies
Through the offsetting mechanism, myclimate finances the additional costs incurred by using renewable energy sources compared to the use of fossil energy sources. This amount varies according to the project size, the technology used and the country in which the project is implemented.
For example, the costs of avoiding a ton of CO2 emissions through a wind project in Madagascar will differ from the cost of avoiding a ton of CO2 emissions using a biogas system in Nepal or a wood chip burner in Switzerland. A decisive factor for the cost differences are the baseline costs that differ according to technology (e.g. wind or solar power systems) and country (industrial vs. developing nation).
Because it would be too complicated to recalculate the cost for every offset, myclimate offers two different portfolios with average prices:
- Portfolio myclimate Gold Standard: The Gold Standard Portfolio comprises international projects that fulfil either the criteria of the Gold Standard CDM or the Gold Standard VER.

- Portfolio myclimate Switzerland: When an offset payment is made toward the myclimate Switzerland Portfolio, half of the emissions are offset in Swiss projects, and the other half in international project in developing and emerging countries.
