Invitation to myclimate Cloud Talk

Topic: "How useful are afforestation projects?"

It’s nearly that time again: on October 5th we’re holding another virtual Cloud Talk, and we would love you to come along. Together with Kahlil Baker, founder of a large-scale afforestation project in Nicaragua, along with Silvana Comino, our in-house expert on nature-based solutions, we will provide an in-depth introduction to the Nicaraguan project (as seen on the “10vor10” programme on the Swiss TV channel SRF). We’ll hear first-hand about the challenges involved in setting it up, and about the day-to-day work on the project. We will also be discussing why forest conservation and afforestation are essential for global climate protection, biodiversity and the local communities. Kai Landwehr, Head of Corporate Marketing and Member of the Management Committee at myclimate, will be leading the conversation.

The event will take place online  The streaming link will be emailed to you shortly before it starts. We look forward to seeing you!

Date: Thursday, 05 October 2023, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

We look forward to a fascinating discussion with you and our guests. Questions can be asked via the chat function.

Background

Over the past few months, criticism of climate protection projects has grown. Projects that follow REDD+ standards have come under particular scrutiny. Reports by major media outlets such as The Guardian (UK), Die Zeit (Germany) and SRF (Switzerland), along with scientific studies, have attracted attention, but have also led to uncertainty in the markets and among companies that were either already voluntarily involved in climate protection or were planning to do so.

Although myclimate does not have such a project in its portfolio, we have been conducting an intensive dialogue on the subject with our customers and partners. In spite of this, we unfortunately do not know how many potentially interested parties will rethink their commitment due to the criticism and fear of possible reputational risk.

In our upcoming Cloud Talk, therefore, we want to talk with full transparency about forest conservation, land use and afforestation projects. We will also go into the specific points of criticism as well as known pitfalls in project planning and implementation. This will offer some guidance to all stakeholders who want to do something for effective climate protection.
