What is CO₂ and what are the primary sources?

Carbon dioxide, or CO₂, is a colourless and odourless gas. It is a natural component of our air and makes up part of the carbon cycle.

Additional CO₂ is released into the Earth’s atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels such as brown coal, hard coal, peat, natural gas and petroleum. The recent increase in worldwide CO₂ emission is not only the primary driver of current climate change, it is also causing acidification of the oceans.
