Hotelplan Suisse – Long-term Partnership for Climate Protection
The travel industry contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases around the world. As developing countries and thus important tourism destinations are very severely affected by the effects of climate change, Hotelplan Suisse decided to increase its commitment to climate protection in 2006. As an important partner of myclimate, Hotelplan Suisse, with the travel brands Travelhouse, Tourisme Pour Tous, Hotelplan and Migros Ferien, has been offering to offset customer air travel ever since. Since 2015, customers have also been able to offset the emissions of their travel by ship. Moreover, the Swiss tour operator offsets all of its own flight emissions.
For its extensive commitment, Hotelplan Suisse was awarded the myclimate award in the category of «Sustainable travel» at the ITB tourism trade fair in Berlin in 2014.
The fact that committing to climate protection does not result in a competitive disadvantage is clearly shown by the current figures from Hotelplan Suisse. The Swiss provider's integration of CO₂ offsetting in its customer advice is systematic and exemplary. Sales advisors in the 81 branches of Hotelplan and Travelhouse actively draw the attention of customers to the offsetting of CO2 emissions from their travel by air or ship. There has been a steady increase in the CO₂ offsetting of Hotelplan Suisse customers in recent years. 28 percent of dossiers had CO2 emissions offset in 2019, which was 3 percent more than in the previous year.
myclimate runs the offsetting page hotelplan-suisse.myclimate.org for Hotelplan Suisse online. A climate protection contribution of 20 francs has been included in all quotes since 2018. Customers who do not want to pay this contribution can remove it from the quote. By contrast, those who want to offset more than 20 francs can donate any amount they like.
Hotelplan is currently supporting the following carbon offset projects from the "M Climate Fund", which is operated by the myclimate foundation together with the Hotelplan parent company Migros. The project "Climate-Friendly Rice Production in Thailand" aims to avoid large amounts of methane and increase farmers' harvest yields by switching to climate-friendly rice production in Thailand. Another project, "Climate-friendly Agroforestry – Cocoa Farming in the Ivory Coast" promotes climate-resilient cocoa cultivation that is better protected against climatic changes. Carbon can be stored thanks to the planting of shade trees. The cocoa farms receive adequate additional remuneration for planting these trees.
