YES Impact Labs - from Iran to Costa Rica

YES Lab Iran was the first event of its kind in the country: Together with the hosting partner Amirkabir University of Technology AUT, myclimate organized the first Iranian “Youth Encounter on Sustainability YES” lab at the shores of the Caspian Sea in December 2016. 18 future sustainability leaders were trained in leadership and entrepreneurial skills and developed their business plans for sustainable ventures. After the lab the two best ideas were presented to the public and business decision makers at the 1st International Conference on Low Carbon Business in Iran, organized by Iranian YES Alumni: “Eco Schools”, a new school competition in Iran, and “Organic B2B”, a platform to connect organic farmers with retailers in novel ways.

During 12 intensive days, participants from Iran, Germany, Kenya, Japan, Pakistan, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Hungary and Azerbaijan built up mind-sets, skill-sets and tool-sets for sustainable change. They were led by national and international experts such as Dr. Reza Maknoon (AUT), Dr. Stefan Gara (ETA Vienna), Klaus Elle (Elle Consulting), Em. Prof. Dr. Ludwig Ellenberg (Humboldt University), Dr. Hamed Ghodussi (Sharif University of Technology) and Dr. Hesam Mahmoudi (Stevens Institute of Technology). The local organization team consisted of dedicated YES Alumni and was led by Morteza Nikravan, YES Alumnus and Co-Head of AUT’s office of sustainability.

Dominik Mösching, executive director of YES, stated: “To my knowledge, it is the first time a cross-sectoral event led by young sustainability leaders was realized in Iran, including government agencies, universities and businesses. This is exactly what YES wants to bring across: Tangible impact through local and global connections.”
