Swiss Youth Hostels – Climate-Conscious Overnight Stays

Swiss Youth Hostels became a myclimate partner in 2008. Since then, when making a booking, guests have been able to take responsibility for the emissions produced during their journey to and overnight stay in a hostel by making a corresponding contribution to climate protection. Climate protection contributions are also made on behalf of Swiss Youth Hostels employees for unavoidable business-related flights and car journeys.

The Swiss Youth Hostels model is unique and very successful. Guests can make a voluntary climate contribution, which is used firstly for compensating for the emissions, and secondly for an internal climate fund. This fund finances internal measures for reduction (e.g. nationwide improvements to reduce water consumption, installation of solar panels and photovoltaic systems). Thanks to these and other measures, Swiss Youth Hostels have managed to gradually reduce the emissions per overnight stay by more than half the tons of CO₂ per square meter in recent years. To compensate for the remaining emissions, Swiss Youth Hostels supports myclimate high quality climate protection projects.

Giving guests the opportunity to make a voluntary contribution to myclimate climate protection projects is a key element of our sustainability strategy. Two thirds of our guests have already done so in 2021, so it has obviously struck a chord.
