Focus on Supply Chain Guidelines: Mäder Kräuter sets SBTi Targets

Under initiatives such as Science Based Targets (SBTi), companies are increasingly committing to defined climate protection targets and contributing to the 1.5°C target with scientifically substantiated reduction paths. The aim of the SBTi is to motivate companies around the world to take measurable climate protection along their entire value chain. This means that suppliers are increasingly coming into focus, with more companies engaging in dialogue with their partners and customers, passing on their sustainability requirements to their upstream and downstream value chains, and calling for transparency around targets. The herb producer Mäder Kräuter meets these requirements thanks to support from Foundation myclimate, and the SME has defined tangible climate targets validated by the SBTi.

Mäder Kräuter AG, based in Boppelsen, north of Zurich, is one of the leading organic herb producers in Switzerland. In its operations in Boppelsen and Ticino, it produces fresh culinary herbs in accordance with the strictest Bio Suisse guidelines. In a comparative study by myclimate, the SME looked at the emissions of its products for the first time in 2023. The study established a product carbon footprint (PCF) for the individual herbs and compared modern and conventional cultivation methods.

To meet the requirements of leading retailers who have also committed to SBTi targets, Mäder Kräuter decided to define its own climate targets. Working with myclimate, the company calculated its first corporate carbon footprint (CCF) based on the PCFs. Scope 1 and 2 emissions were recognised in full, along with the most significant sources of Scope 3 emissions. As an SME, Mäder Kräuter does not have to define targets for its upstream and downstream supply chain, in contrast to larger companies. Nevertheless, the company is committed to measuring and reducing the major sources of Scope 3 emissions (https://sbti.go-for-impact.ch/vorgehen-kmu/).

Once the carbon footprint was calculated, the company determined a reduction path and a reduction target. Mäder Kräuter has set itself the goal of reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030. This target was submitted and successfully validated by the SBTi.

As an SME, Mäder Kräuter is setting a good example: Through continuous innovation and a deep understanding of sustainable agriculture, the company sets standards in the areas of climate protection and resource conservation. Particularly noteworthy is the decision to align with the SBTi – a step that requires time and resources but one that has a major impact both internally and externally. When companies address their own emissions it creates in-depth knowledge and a basis for action, while their clear commitment to effective climate protection sends a strong signal to partners and customers. And as Mäder Kräuter shows, SMEs can play a decisive role – and take an active part in shaping change.
