Since its inception, refurbed has achieved impressive environmental savings.
According to the company, its refurbishment model has already prevented 270,000 tons of CO₂ emissions, 94 billion litres of water and 885 tonnes of electronic waste.
However, reprocessing causes emissions too. The company took responsibility here by planting a tree for every product sold; by early 2024, this amounted to over 6.6 million trees in total.
After a change in strategy, refurbed is now focusing on certified, high-quality climate protection projects. Under its collaboration with myclimate, entire landscapes and ecosystems are being restored in the highlands of northern Ethiopia, a region particularly affected by soil degradation and climate change. The aim of the project is to retain carbon in the soil over the long term through improved land use, soil protection and reforestation, to replenish the groundwater, and to safeguard the livelihoods of the local population.
With its new environmental strategy, refurbed is pursuing a comprehensive, nature-based approach. The aim is to not just to restore forests, but to revitalise entire habitats and boost their ecological functions. At the same time, the involvement of the local population is key.
Measures such as beekeeping, the harvesting of incense and agroforestry projects create new, sustainable sources of income and strengthen the regional economy.
This approach combines environmental responsibility with social commitment and the collaboration with myclimate sends a strong message for a sustainable economy.
