Cost Savings and Improved air quality using Solar Energy in China

Project type: Solar

Project location: China, Henan Province

Project status: In operation, credits available

Annual CO₂ reduction: 20,000 t CO2e

The project installed 48,000 solar cook stoves for rural residents in various townships in Zhenping County, Henan Province, China. The solar cookers replace coal-fired stoves used previously for cooking and for boiling water.

The majority of the rural households in Zhenping uses coal-fired stoves for cooking and for boiling water. Using coal-fired stoves leads to not only significant greenhouse gas emissions but also to indoor air pollution, which represents a high risk for the health of the residents. In addition, the use of coal-fired stoves requires families to spend money on purchasing coal.

The solar cook stove is a device which uses the parabolic reflectors to gather solar radiation for cooking. It is composed of cooker body, pot rack, cooker rack and tracking and adjusting mechanism.

All of the materials and facilities engaged in the project are of domestic manufacture. The solar cookers use solar energy, which is free, renewable, and does not emit CO2. The cookers also emit no smoke which improves the air quality in the households.

The solar cook stoves were distributed and are maintained by the project owner for free. In return, households transfer ownership of emission reductions to the project owner. The project owner uses the proceeds from the sale of emission reduction credits recover the investment in purchasing solar stoves.
