For the renowned banana producer Chiquita the myclimate Carbon Management Services team has analysed four different packing systems for the transport of bananas from Costa Rica to Switzerland in regard to their impact on the climate and the environment.
The analysis resulted in the conclusion that the two reusable synthetic packaging systems included in the study have almost the same impact as the one-way systems of cardboard. Reusable packaging systems would clearly have a better performance than the one-way systems if they were filled with other goods for the return transport. Furthermore the performance can be easily affected by the transport efficiency.
