Offsetting for ship travel – Hotelplan Suisse on board

In 2014, myclimate expanded its portfolio of freely accessible CO₂ calculators to include a variant for ship travel. Due to the very positive customer's experiences for airplane travel calculators, Hotelplan Suisse is now integrating them into their booking system.

Hotelplan Suisse has had a long success story doing carbon compensation with myclimate. Now the largest Swiss travel provider is launching a calculator for ship travel as well. “After successfully integrating CO₂ compensation for airplane travel into its sales process, we're very glad that Hotelplan Suisse is now offering climate-neutral ship travel," says René Estermann, Managing Director of the myclimate Foundation. Guests can book a carbon compensation contribution on a voluntary basis at a Hotelplan or Travelhouse location as well as in a Globus Travel Lounge or online at hotelplan-suisse.myclimate.org. The CO₂ emissions for ship travel can be offset completely or with a partial contribution.

The CO₂ calculator for cruises was developed by myclimate experts in the area of consulting and solutions and is based on a comprehensive scientific study on the topic. Decisive factors for calculating the climate impact of a cruise are the size of the cruise ship, length of the trip, type of cabins and cabin occupancy.

For several years, cruises have been enjoying major popularity, and the trend continues to grow. The CO₂ emissions of ship travel (including freight traffic) have been underestimated in the past. Every year, they contribute around 1 billion tonnes of CO₂ worldwide (ca. 3-4% of worldwide CO₂ emissions) and are almost twice as high as the CO₂ emissions in the airplane industry (according to Guardian, UN, 2008). The calculation of CO₂ emissions for cruise travellers is therefore not only interesting for passengers, but can be quite relevant for businesses and for science in terms of developing a successful climate strategy.
