Pioneer companies and the carbon footprint when travelling – myclimate at the ITB 2017

During the world’s largest travel fair, ITB, myclimate presented myclimate Awards for sustainable yet economically successful offers in the tourism sector. The winners in 2017 are BlaBlaCar, SV Hotels and berg-welt. In the run-up to the award ceremony, myclimate Deutschland managing director, Stefan Baumeister, discuss the issue of carbon footprints when travelling with representatives from Lufthansa, Deutsche Bahn and BlaBlaCar.

The award in the category “Innovator in the hotel sector – global and local climate protection” went to “Klimaschutz rundum” (all-round climate protection) combines effective, local training projects, such as the Klimagarten, or climate garden, in the Renaissance Hotel Munich, with an intensive CO₂ analysis of the individual businesses and the offer of voluntary compensation in the myclimate rooms. These special room offers have already been booked more than 15,000 times by customers.

berg-welt is a specialist provider of mountaineering holidays based in Steffisburg in the Canton of Berne. In addition to the automatic compensation for all offers with air travel, berg-welt is also locally committed to sustainable waste disposal as well as raising awareness with employees and partners. As a result of this, the company received the award as “Pioneer – provider of climate-neutral mountaineering holidays”.

Prior to the award ceremony, the presenter Fritz Lietsch, senior editor of Forum Nachhaltig Wirtschaften (Forum for Sustainable Business), discussed the carbon footprints of various means of transport with Christian Schiller, member of the Senior Management of Comuto Deutschland GmbH (BlaBlaCar), Jan-Ole Jacobs, Manager Environmental Concepts in the Lufthansa Group, and Constantin Zerger, Deutsche Bahn AG, Group Environmental Center as well as Stefan Baumeister.
