The next holiday in climate-neutral accommodation

The summer holiday season is over – but the next holiday is undoubtedly not far away. The Interhome Group, provider of holiday homes and subsidiary of the Migros Group, has this year begun offering the option to offset greenhouse gas emissions directly on its booking platform. This offers guests a straightforward way to offset the CO2 emissions of the holiday home they have booked.

Since 1 January 2022, the Swiss holiday home agency Interhome Group has been enabling all its guests to make a contribution to climate protection. A straightforward process allows the CO2 emissions resulting from a stay in a holiday home or apartment to be offset directly upon booking the property. The price for emissions offsetting is between CHF 1.60 and CHF 2.40 per night for each property, depending on the country. “Sustainability is a matter close to our hearts and we see it as our duty to leave behind an intact environment for future generations. We have therefore decided to integrate carbon offsetting directly into the booking process. Naturally, this offsetting is on a voluntary basis,” explains Interhome CEO Jörg Herrmann.

During the first six months, approximately five percent of bookings were made carbon-neutral. Those responsible at Interhome are applying targeted measures and activities to try and increase this rate further as well as to minimise CO2 emissions directly at the source and thus in the holiday properties themselves. The contributions from the offsetting flow into the overarching M Climate Fund, which supports national and international carbon offset projects within the Migros Group’s value-creation chain, and thus helps to reduce emissions directly.

The portfolio of the Interhome Group, a provider of individual holiday homes, consists of around 40,000 holiday homes and apartments in 27 countries. The varied offering ranges from simple chalets and apartments through to exclusively furnished villas – by the beach, in the countryside or in the mountains.
