One tonne of CO₂ is equivalent to the volume of this balloon, which has a diameter of 9 metres. On average, Swiss people fill almost 14 of these balloons every year. As a result, the concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere continues to rise, accelerating climate change.
Your annual CO₂ budget
Under the Paris Agreement, Switzerland has committed to limiting global warming to 1.5°C. To achieve this goal and thus halt the ongoing climate change, CO₂ emissions per person should not exceed a certain limit. In Switzerland, the annual CO₂ budget currently stands at 0.6 tonnes per person – which is less than the volume of this balloon.
The main causes of harmful emissions include air and car travel, your heating and electricity consumption, and your diet. You can find more information on climate change, myclimate and your personal options for climate protection in our FAQs.
