Project type: Energy Efficiency
Project location: Switzerland
Annual CO₂ reduction: 710 t
The FOEN-certified climate protection programme promotes the use of alternative drive technologies on Swiss roads. Replacing conventional diesel buses with electric and hybrid buses cuts down on fossil fuels and thus avoids CO₂ emissions.
The number of electric and hybrid buses on Swiss roads remains insignificant and are estimated to account for less than 1%. Conventional diesel buses are still the first choice for new acquisitions. Various pilot projects with electric and hybrid buses have been unable to buck this trend. Key reasons for this are the high investment costs and the lack of experience.
The climate protection programme encourages the purchase of electric and hybrid buses. As a FOEN-registered programme, reduction certificates issued by the FOEN can be purchased for reductions in CO₂ emissions generated by the electric and hybrid buses. The proceeds from the sale of the certificates enable bus operators to plan their capital outlays more profitably in the medium term. The programme is open to both public transport operators as well as private bus companies throughout Switzerland.
Since 2014, bus operator Eurobus, the Regionale Verkehrsbetriebe Baden-Wettingen (RVBW) and Aare Seeland mobil have become the first participants to employ several hybrid buses in Switzerland. Verkehrsbetriebe Luzern (vbl), Busbetriebe Ostschweiz (BOS) and L’Oiseau Bleu participated later. Other operators are constantly joining the programme.
The programme and the companies participating in it are not only making an important contribution to cutting emissions, but their pioneering role will also make a valuable contribution to raising public awareness of and experience with the use of electric and hybrid buses on Swiss roads.
Participation in the programme:
myclimate would be delighted to present the programme in detail to interested bus operators and in collaboration with them enable a tailor-made participation. For further information please contact us directly.
