Wind Energy Delivers Renewable Power in Turkey

Project type: Wind

Project location: Çesme, Turkey

Project status: Completed, credits available

Annual CO₂ reduction: 36,188 t

In Çesme, Turkey, myclimate supports the construction of a wind farm in the country. The six wind turbines deliver renewable power to 22,000 people.

Kores WPP is located in the centre of the Peninsula of Çesme in the province of Izmir in Turkey. It consists of six wind turbines Nordex N90 of the 2.5 MW output, 90 m diameter and a hub height of 80 m. The wind turbines are connected to the wind farm substation through 34.5 kV underground cables. The voltage is raised to 154 kV, transferred to the Electricity Transformer Station, Alaçati-Urla TM, via a 50 m long transmission line and then fed into the national power grid.

The license for the 17.5 MW wind power plant was issued to Kores by EPDK in June 2006. The six turbines have been in operation since December 2009. In 2010, the total electricity produced was 47'400 mWh. This is enough to supply 22,000 people with renewable energy and also leads to expected annual emission reductions of 36’188 t CO₂. In addition Kores has built an information centre close to the wind power plant for children and young adults.

The project will help Turkey to stimulate and commercialise the use of grid connected renewable energy technologies and markets. Furthermore, the project will demonstrate the viability of grid connected wind farms which can support improved energy security, improved air quality, alternative sustainable energy futures, create local employment during the construction and the operation phase of the wind farm, and improve local livelihoods.
