Klimafest 2013: Doris Leuthard and Bertrand Piccard honour young climate activists

What happens when more than 1,000 children take over the venerable Kursaal in Berne and throw a party for the environment? It creates so much energy that even Doris Leuthard and Bertrand Piccard are deeply impressed.

More than 1,100 children and young people, the always supremely inspiring project sponsor, Bertrand Piccard, freestyle beats, fat bass, and even a nod from the highest level of political leadership: That was the Klimafest of the climate pioneers of 2013.

The festive highlight of their year took place yesterday at the Kursaal in Berne. The young pioneers, from all over German-speaking Switzerland, as well as Ticino, were treated to quite a programme. After initial remarks made by moderator Ueli Schmetzer, Bertrand Piccard was greeted like a pop star. It only took him a few sentences to inspire his audience. "Never let anyone tell you that it's impossible to make your dreams come true!" he reassured the young pioneers, using the example of his own life. Afterwards, Bertrand Piccard awarded the representatives of each class with a special certificate for their service.

Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard, one of Switzerland’s most senior politicians, congratulated the climate pioneers. Just one day before heading to the World Climate Conference in Warsaw, she encouraged the crowd to stay the course: "Children are the best ambassadors and, by remaining persistent, can achieve a great deal for the environment"

For the grand finale, freestyle rapper Knackeboul blew the climate pioneers away with a 30-minute set, which included his exclusive climate pioneer rap.
