For many years now, the Lufthansa Group has been cooperating with the non-profit organization myclimate and assuming responsibility for effective climate protection – with a clearly defined route to CO₂ neutrality. By 2030, the Group’s own net CO₂ emissions are to be halved in comparison with 2019; by 2050 the Lufthansa Group aims to achieve a neutral CO₂ footprint.
The company is focusing in particular on reducing its own CO₂ emissions by accelerating fleet modernization, continuously optimizing flight operations, using sustainable aviation fuels, and making innovative offers to its customers – even directly in the booking process. Customers can make a climate protection contribution to high-quality climate protection projects that correspond to the amount of emissions generated during the flight.
For this purpose, the Lufthansa Group has created attractive offers that can either be booked as extras or are already integrated into tariffs. The Lufthansa Group is also offering business customers various opportunities for sustainable air travel.
No matter which route Lufthansa Group customers take, two options – which can also be combined with one another – are available:
The Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) for Direct Emissions Reduction
Sustainable fuel certified according to European and in-house standards reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80 per cent in comparison with conventional aviation fuels based on fossil energy sources. SAF already represents an effective opportunity for customers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. SAF is available to all customers of the Lufthansa Group.
Contribution to High-Quality Carbon Offset Projects from myclimate
As a further option, Lufthansa Group travellers can choose to make a climate protection contribution in the amount of the remaining CO₂ emissions. This supports high-quality myclimate climate protection projects worldwide that avoid or save emissions and at the same time contribute to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The following myclimate climate protection projects are supported by the Lufthansa Group:
