IMBACH Reisen: ‘Sustainability in tourism is possible’

IMBACH Reisen is one of the pioneers in global walking holidays. The Lucerne-based tour operator can look back on a history spanning more than fifty years. IMBACH Reisen and myclimate have been working in close partnership since 2014.

IMBACH Reisen, a company belonging to the Twerenbold Reisen Group, has always been strongly committed to climate protection and demonstrates that this is also possible within the travel industry.

Imbach Reisen has been TourCert-certified since 2024 and has been rated Level III – ‘leading’ – in the Swisstainable sustainability programme. This places even greater emphasis on the issue of sustainability.
Since 2023, a contribution to climate protection has been included in every trip, which customers cannot opt out of during the booking process. The travel calculator, developed specifically by myclimate, determines the necessary emission values for each trip. By booking with IMBACH Reisen, customers automatically support climate action and make a financial contribution equivalent to the carbon footprint of their booked trip. Managing Director Martin Fehrlin is particularly pleased with this commitment:

As a tour operator, we are aware of our responsibility in the areas of environmental, social and economic sustainability. That is why supporting climate protection projects is so important to us, and we do not wish to leave this to the discretion of our customers.

Naturally, the emissions generated by flights taken by staff and tour guides are also calculated, and financing for climate protection projects is provided to the same extent.

Contribution to climate protection for clean drinking water and peatland conservation

The amount, which is integrated directly into the booking of a trip, goes towards, amongst other things, two specific climate protection projects run by myclimate. Firstly, it supports the project ‘Clean drinking water for schools and households through filter systems in Uganda’. The main aim of this climate protection programme is to provide poorer households and institutions such as schools in Uganda with new technologies to purify drinking water. The resulting reduction in the use of firewood and charcoal reduces CO₂ emissions whilst also having a positive impact on the living conditions and health of thousands of people.

However, as IMBACH Reisen also wishes to contribute to climate protection directly on the ground, another portion of the contributions to climate protection goes towards the conservation of the Bannwald raised bog in Lucerne. The staff were even able to visit this project themselves in April 2026, which generated a great deal of enthusiasm within the team.

It was very enriching to see for ourselves and have it explained to us how the financial support is being used on the ground. And just how important peatlands are. We were very impressed by the work that has gone into this relatively small area to carry out the rewettings of the peatlands.
