Value Chain Projects

Value chain projects reduce the climate impact in a targeted manner within the company’s own value chain, with a focus on upstream and downstream emissions (Scope 3), i.e. where the lion’s share of the carbon footprint occurs for most companies. They play a key role in decarbonisation as part of a credible net-zero strategy, while strengthening supplier relationships and product stewardship.

Addressing Scope 3 emissions effectively

For many companies, upstream and downstream emissions (Scope 3) account for more than 75 per cent of total emissions. And this is where value chainprojects come in: embedded in your value chain, both up- and downstream. These could take the form of regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, more efficient logistics or process optimisation, for example. Initiatives such as the SBTi emphasise the point that it is essential to address issues in the value chain in order to realistically reach net zero targets.

Value chain projects are also of great strategic importance: they reduce emissions, improve the resilience of global supply chains, increase competitiveness and help meet growing regulatory requirements (e.g. SBTi, CSRD), as well as customer demands.

It is important to note that, unlike other myclimate projects, this does not result in tradable CO₂ certificates. The climate impact is attributed exclusively to the investing company and can thus be mentioned in its annual report.

The key benefits at a glance

Reduction at the core of the value chain
Targeted reduction of Scope 3 emissions – a key prerequisite on the path to net zero, both globally and within the company.

Compliance with regulatory requirements
The financing of value chain projects supports SBTi-compliant Scope 3 strategies and meets new reporting requirements.

Strengthens and secures supply chains
Projects promote innovation and cooperation with supply partners and increase climate resilience, for example in coffee, cocoa and rice cultivation.

Increases credibility and reputation
Investing in your own supply chain demonstrates a sense of responsibility for indirect emissions and underscores your long-term commitment.
